Thanks Matthew and good luck on the water in 2013!

Good tip on keeping the filet attached for balance when switching sides. I’ll have to use that one.

Never really tried it on sunfish because the sunfish skin is very delicate and it would not come off in one piece, so your better off not try that method for pan fish – but it’s fantastic for perch 🙂

Hey Ivo, really appreciate your videos. Quick question, you have a video of Claudio cleaning perch. Could you use the quick skin peeling method on panfish? Thanks again

seaneire says:

thanks friend

thundermistlures says:

The only time you would remove the scales is if you plan on keeping the skin on. If you are removing the skin, then as you suggested, you do not need to remove the scales 🙂

Thanks for tuning in – glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 Good luck on the water!

i find it better to descale the fish under water so that the scales dont fly around the room good job tho

Thanks for writing in and sharing your thoughts with us – until next time, good luck and good fishing :)

I just scale them, gut them, and fry them whole. Filleting wastes lots of meat and other tasty parts in my opinion.

thundermistlures says:

Thanks for the tip. Bluegills are worth cleaning. Good fishing to you!

aadams12294 says:

why do you remove the scales? isnt it just easier to cut the skin off when you remove the fillet?

AshamanDice says:

Good vid. This is how my my someone taught me (though we run the knife along the belly the same way as the spine as a guide for the knife to lessen the chance of cutting the guts). Works great for crappies. Maybe I should start bringing bluegills back home again, instead of throwing them back. They’re certainly hard NOT to catch. First time I tried to fillet them it didn’t go so well. Oh, some advice, a spoon works great to descale them and is safer of course.

AshamanDice says:

If you’re a boyscout, sure. If you’re an adult willing to take the risk so that the job is easier then why not?

thundermistlures says:

Thanks! Good luck on the water! 🙂

Interesting way of cleaning bluegill.. I tried filleting once…What a failure on my part. I just said piss on it, and went back to cleaning them the way I learned.

thundermistlures says:

halofreak4t5 says:

aren’t you supposed to NEVER cut towards yourself? I learned this shit in boyscouts

XHermit4Life says:

Thanks! I’ll remember that 😀

thundermistlures says:

Just slide your knife just under the skin and slide your knife blade along the inside of the skin and it will come right off 🙂

XHermit4Life says:

How do you take the skin off? :0

thundermistlures says:

We are not sure why he said that either…

ufcallyear says:
